He makes a good point, but even if alien intelligences think to pulse their data bursts in this manner, we still run up against the annoying fact of distance. Unless they're within a few thousand light years of us, we still can't guarantee their civilization still exists by the time we answer. And even if they do receive our answer, will we be around when they respond? I hate that no matter how lofty SETI's goal, we're still just pinging out our messages, hoping someone hears us in the blackness.

Re: Seth from SETI on new reception strategy
Fri, January 13, 2006 - 4:51 PMIs not only is space vast, but unlikely to have intelligent species that are that technologically advanced nearby enough to us to send such a signal… -

Re: Seth from SETI on new reception strategy
Fri, January 13, 2006 - 10:01 PMOr so technically advanced that they would not think of looking at those frequencies again. -

Re: Seth from SETI on new reception strategy
Tue, January 17, 2006 - 2:40 PMQuite True, but I’d think that such and intelligence might be back-tracking technology wise; to accommodate what they’d reasonably expect from any developing civilization. -

Re: Seth from SETI on new reception strategy
Wed, January 18, 2006 - 7:27 AMIF they want to. They would have to be curious about communicating with a backward civilization. Maybe they just choose to wait for us to catch up. -

I suspect that would be a wise move on their behalf.
Both arguments (and more) hold water when dealing with an Alien Intelligence... -

Re: Seth from SETI on new reception strategy
Fri, January 20, 2006 - 6:14 AMwell I think we dont have a chance to communicate with another "kind" on any method or even timeline as we know it today. It would/will take place in "another dimension". That is the only answer to overcome all the communication difficulties like time lapse, distance, technology. Luckily scientists like Hawking are slowly approaching more basic information of the structure of the universe, which is bringing such long distance calls into reality -

Re: Seth from SETI on new reception strategy
Fri, January 20, 2006 - 11:38 AMI need to bone up on my quantum physics to answer such questions as: are other dimensions demonstrably provable, or just theoretical at this point. And if they are real, how would one go about sending information through them to the beings that live there. Any thoughts? It seems to me that it would very difficult to retain the integrity of any information we send from one dimension to another. If the physical laws are different on the "other side", any container or frequency we send would likely be rather...altered by the time it got to it's intended receivers.
Just my 2 centavos... -
