Here's a must read from one of my favourite theoretical physicists, Michio Kaku (strangely, he avoids any discussion of the Fermi Paradox):
The Physics of Extra-Terrestrial Civilizations
How advanced could they possibly be?

Re: The Physics of Extra-Terrestrial Civilizations
Tue, August 30, 2005 - 11:03 PMThat's a fantastic article. Ever since I read Hyperspace, I've been a fan of Dr. Kaku. He may have dropped a hint or two about the Fermi Paradox, though... He did say that it would be less-than-prefect to transmit radio waves on a single frequency and that maybe they are out there right now, just spread across the spectrum. Maybe we're just the special needs planetary system and can't figure out how to hear everybody. The idea of 'seeing' the waste heat from a type two or three civilization is tantalizing, though... Must think on this one!
